“When you look at my photographs, you are looking at my thoughts.” This statement perfectly states the revolutionary concept behind Duane Michals’ photography, a great innovator and one of the most important forerunners of conceptual photography.
Experimental, poetic, and introspective. Duane Michals (McKeesport, Pennsylvania, 1932) works in balance between conceptual photography and visual poetry. Throughout his career, he has defied the boundaries of the photographic medium, incorporating handwritten texts, narrative, sequences, and especially, a profoundly personal perspective that seeks to capture the unseen: emotions, fears, desires…but also spirituality, the inner self, and death.
With 150 pieces, the exhibition offers a broad retrospective on the photographer, from his first images to some of his latest snapshots created in 2025. In addition to his famous sequences, it includes portraits of artists who influenced his creative universe, like Duchamp, Magritte, and Warhol, along with images of current celebrities like Tilda Swinton, and self-portraits, where humour and emotional depth naturally blend together.
