Planeta azul ¿Planeta agua? (Blue Planet. Water Planet?)

DESCRIPTION

Planeta azul ¿Planeta agua? (Blue Planet. Water Planet?) is a cultural action for environmental awareness promoted by Fundación Canal in the heart of Madrid. It will remain in Puerta del Sol until 19 July for the enjoyment of all citizens and visitors.

This is an anamorphic illustration spanning 97.2 m2 that invites citizens to participate and look at the planet from another perspective and reflect, in an entertaining and visual way, on the value of this scarce resource.

The work depicts a profound, gigantic cavern in the ground. There are four spheres floating inside it: planet Earth, and another three smaller spheres. To scale, they represent the following: the largest one, the earth’s total volume; another, which is much smaller, represents the total volume of water on the planet, which occupies 70% of the earth’s surface area, which is why it is called the blue planet. However, this water covering the earth is merely and thin layer and it only accounts for 0.001% of its total volume.

Anamorphosis is an artistic technique that creates a distorted image that can only be seen correctly from a specific point of view. This technique is based on the principles of perspective and optics. In this case, it uses mobile devices, telephones, and photo and video cameras.

This activity is part of 2026’s special programme to celebrate Canal de Isabel II’s 175th and Fundación Canal’s 25th anniversaries.
