Fundación Canal is pleased to present Clifford. Vistas del Madrid de Isabel II (Clifford. Views of Isabel II’s Madrid), an exhibition featuring the work of a photography pioneer. It consists of a selection of almost one hundred images structured into four sections: Los placeres de la fotografía (The Pleasures of Photography), El viejo y el nuevo Madrid (Old and New Madrid), Al servicio de la monarquía (At the Service of the Monarchy), and La construcción del Canal de Isabel II: una obra digna de romanos (The Construction of the Isabel II Canal: A Work Worthy of the Romans). The exhibition shows Madrid before the arrival of water, a Madrid very different from the one we know today. The most ambitious engineering feat of the time, which arrived with almost a century’s delay, opened the city’s door to modernity.

This exhibition, held for the 170th anniversary of creation of the Canal of Isabel II, boasts important loans from National Heritage, the National Library, the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando, and other prestigious institutions. They reveal an undiscovered mid-19th century Madrid, as well as one of the features by Clifford on great public works at the time. Specifically, construction of the Canal of Isabel II and water supply to Madrid.

In turn, this exhibition is also a journey through the evolution of photography technique and its early history in Spain under one of its pioneers.
