Water is one of the great themes in Sebastião Salgado’s photography. For more than two decades, the photographer travelled to some of the planet’s most remote landscapes to capture the force, immensity, and different forms of this essential element for life. Aqua Mater provides a wide selection of his work in an exhibition that takes visitors on a tour of some of the planet’s most awe-inspiring landscapes. This is an invitation to reflect on the relationship between humans and the most valuable resource for life.
For the first time in Madrid, this exhibition introduces a joint selection from the series Aqua Mater and Glaciers, with nearly one hundred large-sized black and white photographs. Organised by La Fábrica in collaboration with Fundación Canal, it is curated by Lélia Wanick Salgado. The exhibition has come to Madrid with a presentation especially designed for the Castellana 214 Hall.
The Antarctic, Patagonia, the Amazon basin, Iceland, Himalaya, and Canada are some of the landscapes included on this journey, designed to immerse visitors in the diversity and beauty of landscapes related to water through the eyes of one of our great contemporary photographers.
This year, Canal de Isabel II is celebrating its 175th anniversary by guaranteeing water supply to millions of citizens and Fundación Canal is commemorating its first 25 years of history. Aqua Mater is also a celebration of water as an element shared across nature, culture, knowledge and sustainability.
