Monsters in the Arts. From Fear to the Myth

20251030 Delabla Conferencia Arteycultura Adaptaciones Banner Responsive Scaled 2

DESCRIPTION

As part of the exhibition Expresionismo. Un arte de cine (Expressionism. Art at its Most Cinematic), Fundación Canal is hosting a conference to reveal the origin of some of the most fascinating creatures in film.

In expressionist art, the figure of the monster took on a central role, intended to act as a cultural metaphor to reflect the collective fears of interwar European society and humankind’s darkest desires. From Nosferatu to The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, expressionist film transformed fear into art and breathed life into a visual universe that continues to inspire directors like Tim Burton, Guillermo del Toro, and David Lynch.

Film History professor José Luis Sánchez Noriega will take us on a thrilling tour through the evolution of monsters on the big screen: from the shadows of silent film to the dreams and nightmares of the 21st century.

A unique opportunity to discover how expressionist cinema has contributed to our understanding of horror.
