8 October 2025 through 4 January 2026, Fundación Canal presents Expresionismo. Un arte de cine (Expressionism. Art at Its Most Cinematic), an exhibition that reveals the German expressionism movement and cinema in the early 20th century.
This collection provides a tour of one of the most decisive chapters in European cultural history, casting light on how art and film became powerful mirrors of reality and the human condition at a time of crisis and transformation. The visitor thus delves into this revolutionary cultural movement that sought to join art and life, thereby blurring the boundaries between different artistic disciplines by connecting painting, sculpture, theatre, literature, and film to build a unique aesthetic and emotional universe.
Organised in collaboration with the Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau Foundation and The Institute for Cultural Exchange (Institut für Kulturaustausch) in Tübingen, Germany, it boasts a total of 152 pieces, including 76 paintings, drawings, prints, and sculptures by some of the most noteworthy figureheads in German expressionism, brought into dialogue with a selection of 19 excerpts and 57 frames from eleven great masterpieces in film.
With this collection, the visitor sees how art at the time sought to dilute boundaries to create a unified and all-encompassing experience.
