Are we listening?\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These\u00a0<strong>long-lasting ice and snow masses<\/strong>\u00a0very slowly slide along the ground they sit on. We can find glaciers both in mountainous terrain and in large flat zones, on every continent all around the planet. In Arag\u00f3n&#8217;s Pyrenees, in the La Maladeta range, we have one of the southernmost glaciers in Europe. Videoblog ambiental de la Fundaci\u00f3n Canal | Medio Ambiente\" width=\"1170\" height=\"658\"  data-cookieconsent=\"marketing\" type=\"text\/plain\" data-cookieblock-src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/n9iSouUKqPE?feature=oembed&#038;showinfo=0&#038;rel=0&#038;modestbranding=1\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Glaciers, along with the planet\u2019s other solid water masses, form the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.un-glaciers.org\/es\/articles\/la-asamblea-general-de-las-naciones-unidas-aprueba-el-decenio-de-accion-para-las-ciencias#:~:text=La%20cri%C3%B3sfera%2C%20que%20incluye%20glaciares,miles%20de%20millones%20de%20personas.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>\u00a0cryosphere<\/strong><\/a><strong>,\u00a0<\/strong> which acts as a <strong>reservoir of water resources <\/strong>and supports a specific biodiversity. In addition, it <strong>regulates the Earth\u2019s climate <\/strong>by reflecting the sun\u2019s rays into space (the albedo effect) and by contributing to the maintenance of\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/fjferrer.webs.ull.es\/Apuntes3\/Leccion04\/4_circulacin_global_de_la_corriente_termohalina.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u00a0thermohaline circulation <\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>A Delicate Balance<\/strong>\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Glaciers and ice layers account for approximately\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ipcc.ch\/srocc\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">70% of the planet&#8217;s fresh water\u00a0<\/a>according to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. These storehouses uphold a\u00a0<strong>delicate balance.\u00a0<\/strong>During cold seasons, snow falls on them and makes them increase in size. Conversely, during the warm seasons, the ice melts, slowly releasing water and feeding nearby populations and ecosystems.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This\u00a0<strong>balance has been broken\u00a0<\/strong>by our current <a href=\"https:\/\/news.un.org\/es\/story\/2024\/12\/1535431\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>temperature increase.<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0 Glaciers are losing more water than they are gaining; they are shrinking. In <strong>2023, they lost <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/wmo.int\/es\/news\/media-centre\/un-informe-de-la-organizacion-meteorologica-mundial-omm-pone-de-relieve-la-creciente-escasez-y\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>600 gigatonnes of water<\/strong> <\/a>\u00a0\u2014 equivalent to 13% of the world\u2019s annual consumption \u2014 the largest loss recorded in 50 years of observations\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to freshwater reserves, we are losing food and energy resources, since this process modifies the water cycle, elevates the sea level, and alters biodiversity. Safety is also jeopardised, with an increased risk of flooding nearby populations and a likelihood of extreme weather events occurring around the globe.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>A Historical Archive of Special Value<\/strong>\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With glaciers, we also lose <strong>cultural<\/strong> and <strong>scientific values.<\/strong> The layers of ice and snow of which glaciers are made trap\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/cordis.europa.eu\/article\/id\/29438-ice-cores-give-up-800000-years-of-climate-data\/es\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">small air bubbles, pollen, and particles<\/a>\u00a0that tell us\u00a0<strong>what the climate was like when they were created hundreds of thousands of years ago. This helps us to predict future evolution more accurately<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We have been <strong>monitoring glaciers<\/strong> with different techniques for over 130 years. Nowadays we have satellites for this task, like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.esa.int\/Applications\/Observing_the_Earth\/FutureEO\/CryoSat\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Cryosat,<\/a> which belongs to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.esa.int\/Space_in_Member_States\/Spain\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ESA.<\/a> It provides reliable, real-time data for monitoring. We had the chance to listen to it at the conference held at Fundaci\u00f3n Canal\u00a0<em>\u201c<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/1fKe-F_Udmg?si=zjhlfJZUjt8TgbiS\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Climate Change From Space<\/em><\/a><em>.\u201d<\/em>\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In Spain, since 2011, the <a href=\"https:\/\/patrimonionatural.csic.es\/glaciar_monte_perdido\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Monte Perdido glacier monitoring project<\/a> has sought to understand how this glacier behaves in its final phases, so we can improve knowledge and conservation of other ice masses farther to the north.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Initiatives to Protect Glaciers<\/strong>\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Given the delicate situation of the cryosphere, <strong>international agreements have been signed to legally protect it<\/strong>, such as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ats.aq\/s\/antarctictreaty.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u00a0Antarctic Treaty <\/a>\u00a0or the <a href=\"https:\/\/eur-lex.europa.eu\/ES\/legal-content\/summary\/convention-on-the-protection-of-the-alps.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u00a0Convention for the Protection of the Alps <\/a>, and <strong>initiatives<\/strong> are being developed, like UNESCO\u2019s programme to <a href=\"https:\/\/portals.iucn.org\/library\/sites\/library\/files\/documents\/2022-040-En.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u00a0conserve glaciers in World Heritage Sites. <\/a>\u00a0At a <strong>regional level<\/strong>, we have protected areas such as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rednaturaldearagon.com\/monumento-natural-glaciares-pirenaicos\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u00a0Natural Monument of the Pyrenean Glaciers<\/a>, declared by the Government of Arag\u00f3n.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The most effective measure to stop or slow down glacier loss is <strong>to mitigate climate change by reducing greenhouse gas emissions.<\/strong> In fact, the UNESCO affirms that by keeping the global temperature increase at 1.5\u00baC, we could save two-thirds of glaciers in World Heritage Sites.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Also hugely important are <strong>adaptation<\/strong> <strong>measures<\/strong>, both through risk maps and models and early warning systems, such as US programme <a href=\"https:\/\/www.weather.gov\/tsunamiready\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">TsunamiReady<\/a>, designed to warn the local population if tsunamis could occur due to dislodged ice masses. Additionally, improving management systems for meltwater, especially with <a href=\"https:\/\/iucn.org\/es\/nuestro-trabajo\/soluciones-basadas-en-la-naturaleza\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">nature-based solutions <\/a>, such as restoring headwaters and river corridors, eases adaptation to future changes in water availability.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u201cSave Our Glaciers\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0is the slogan that the United Nations picked for\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/es\/observances\/water-day\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">World Water Day 2025<\/a>. Moreover, this year was designated\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.un-glaciers.org\/en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">International Year of Glaciers&#8217; Preservation<\/a>.
