The use of regenerated water allows us to reserve higher-quality water for human consumption, contributing to the net increase of reservoir water availability.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<div class=\"flex-video widescreen youtube\"><div class=\"cookieblock-placeholder\">\n                Por favor, <a href=\"javascript:Cookiebot.renew()\">acepta las cookies<\/a> para ver este contenido.\n             <\/div>\n             <iframe title=\"Videoblog \u201cAgua m\u00e1s depurada\u201d | Medio Ambiente\" width=\"1170\" height=\"658\"  data-cookieconsent=\"marketing\" type=\"text\/plain\" data-cookieblock-src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/k1xC1UJE4ZA?feature=oembed&#038;showinfo=0&#038;rel=0&#038;modestbranding=1\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A <strong>particularly interesting<\/strong> <strong>use<\/strong> for <strong>regenerated water<\/strong> from WWTPs is <strong>its return to watercourses and the recharge of aquifers.<\/strong> Aquifer recharge projects like\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/www.life-matrix-project.eu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>LIFE Matrix<\/em><\/a> have been developed. \u202fWe discuss this in the post\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fundacioncanal.com\/blog\/aguas-subterraneas\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Groundwater. Invisible, Yet Essential<\/em><\/a><em>.\u202f<\/em>But there are also others, like\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/dinamar.tragsa.es\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>DINA-MAR,<\/em><\/a><em>\u202f<\/em>to determine which zones in Spain can recharge with minimum impact standards and study related technological developments, or the\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/www.esferadelagua.es\/agua-y-tecnologia\/recarga-artificial-de-acuiferos\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>LIFE ENSAT<\/em><\/a><em>\u202f<\/em> project, which developed an efficient technique to reduce some of the emerging compounds (we will discuss this later) in recharge water, thereby improving the quality of the aquifer&#8217;s water.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/azudindustrial.com\/reutilizacion-de-aguas-de-proceso-cerrando-el-ciclo-del-agua-en-la-industria\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u202f<strong>Industry<\/strong>\u202falso reuses water in its processes<\/a>\u202fin auxiliary systems (like cooling circuits and boilers) to protect nozzles, sprayers, or cleaning equipment, wash industrial machinery, for cleaning systems, to wash tubs in the agri-food industry, and more. Depending on how it is used, different treatment techniques are employed to obtain the most suitable quality.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Under the umbrella of the\u202f<strong>European Green Deal,\u202f<\/strong>a package of political initiatives that aspires to a\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/environment.ec.europa.eu\/strategy\/zero-pollution-action-plan_en?etrans=es&amp;prefLang=es\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">pollution-free environment by 2050<\/a>\u202fand considers that the cost of inaction is much higher than the cost of prevention, the\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/eur-lex.europa.eu\/legal-content\/ES\/TXT\/HTML\/?uri=CELEX:52021DC0400\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Zero Pollution Action Plan<\/a>\u202fsets the target by 2030 of improving water quality by reducing waste, discarded plastic in the sea (by 50%), and microplastics dumped in surface waters (by 30%).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>New developments in\u202f<strong>European regulations<\/strong>, and by extension, in\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/www.boe.es\/eli\/es\/rd\/2024\/10\/22\/1085\/con\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Spanish regulations<\/strong><\/a>, establish stricter requirements for nutrients coming from wastewater, new regulations for microcontaminants, and new control requirements for microplastics. These are\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/www.miteco.gob.es\/es\/agua\/temas\/estado-y-calidad-de-las-aguas\/contaminantes-emergentes.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>emerging contaminants<\/strong><\/a>: compounds which, thanks to progress in analytical chemistry in recent years, can now be quantified in water at very low concentration levels. They can have harmful effects on both the environment and on human health. In fact, some emerging contaminants behave as endocrine disruptors, although they may have other toxic effects.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The number of substances that can be considered emergent is undetermined and includes pharmaceuticals, pesticides, and other biocides, additives used in materials such as antioxidants, flame retardants, plasticisers, anti-rust agents, household products like detergents, cosmetics, and creams, and drugs.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Every two years, the European Commission revises the\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/eur-lex.europa.eu\/legal-content\/es\/TXT\/?uri=CELEX%3A32022D1307\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>observation list<\/strong><\/a>\u202fthrough which it identifies possible new contaminants that then go on the\u202f<strong>list of priority substances<\/strong>\u202fif they pose a significant risk, determined based on the danger and concentration of the substances in the water. In 2022, 25 substances with well-documented problematic effects on nature and human health were added. These include <strong>PFAS<\/strong>, a large group of persistent chemical substances used in cookware, clothing, furniture, firefighting foam, and personal care products, as well as certain pharmaceuticals such as pain relievers, anti-inflammatories, and antibiotics.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Wastewater purification treatments to control emergent contaminants apply <strong>advanced technologies<\/strong> like ozonisation, activated charcoal absorption, and membrane filtration. Given that 92% of toxic microcontaminants found in the EU&#8217;s wastewater come from pharmaceutical and cosmetic products, a new system for <strong>increased producer liability<\/strong> will force them to pay the expenses to eliminate them.
