Any living being, whether animal or plant, must hydrate for full development and to complete its life cycle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In Spain, the <strong>agro-livestock sector is responsible\nfor 80% of global water consumption<\/strong>. In order to improve sustainable\nmanagement of this resource, we must optimise consumption in these primary\nsectors, which are also essential to the structure of the economy and the\nregion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"contenedor\">\n<iframe class=\"iframeVideo\" data-cookieblock-src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/qfcMNp0tHrc?si=yWaKJy6tCQchMWrI\" data-cookieconsent=\"marketing\" title=\"YouTube video player\" fframeborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Agricultural irrigation<\/strong> is the main culprit behind this consumption, as demonstrated by the most recent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ine.es\/prensa\/euasa_2018.pdf\">survey on the use of water in the farming sector<\/a> by the <em>Instituto Nacional de Estad\u00edstica<\/em> (National Statistics Institute) (INE), which shows that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mapa.gob.es\/gl\/ministerio\/servicios\/informacion\/plataforma-de-conocimiento-para-el-medio-rural-y-pesquero\/observatorio-de-tecnologias-probadas\/material-de-riego\/riego-gravedad.aspx\">traditional gravity irrigation systems<\/a>&nbsp;still account for 33% of the total. With the modernisation of agriculture, we have developed other, more productive systems, such as spray irrigation, or <strong>systems more efficient in water use<\/strong>, like localised or precision irrigation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Trickle irrigation is one of the most well-known <strong>localised\nirrigation systems<\/strong>, which can lead to water savings of up to 36% in\ncomparison with spray irrigation. Even more efficient is <strong>precision\nirrigation<\/strong>, which can increase these savings by up to 52%. With the aid of\ntechnology, one can irrigate differently depending on the crop, conditions of the\nterrain, and the time of the season.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These data reinforce a message of hope, where\ntechnological progress facilitates better use of the resource and better crops\nwith smaller volumes of water.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The \u201c<strong>water <\/strong>footprint\u201d has become popular to\nhomogeneously calculate water use in production, both for foods and for other\ngoods and services. This defines the volume of freshwater used directly or\nindirectly to produce a good or service. There are organisations like the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.waterfootprint.org\/\">Water\nFootprint Network<\/a>&nbsp;that provide precise information on the water\nfootprint left by a large number of foods and other products we use every day.\nFor <strong>farm-produced foods<\/strong>, we can&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.waterfootprint.org\/resources\/interactive-tools\/product-gallery\/\">estimate their water footprint<\/a>&nbsp;throughout the\nentire cultivation process until harvest, or throughout their entire life\ncycle, including packaging, commercialisation, sales, and recycling processes.\nThus, the water footprint for a tomato ranges from 186 l\/kg until the moment of\nharvest, to 214 l\/kg for its entire life cycle. In general, the water footprint\nof fruits and vegetables is considerably smaller than other foods like meat,\nwhich is largely increased by water needs for the compound feed used to nourish\nthe animal. This means that chicken meat has a 4,325 l\/kg water footprint,\nwhile pork is 5,988 l\/kg, and beef 15,415 l\/kg. To give you an idea of these\namounts, a bathtub&#8217;s capacity ranges from 150 to 190 litres of water, depending\non its size.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is also possible to apply the concept of <strong>water\nfootprints to other goods and services<\/strong>. This concept acts as a\nsustainability indicator for the intensity of water resources required for\nproduction. It shows us that to manufacture a DIN A4 sheet of paper, one needs\napproximately 10 litres of water, while a cotton T-shirt requires 2,720 litres,\nand denim trousers 10,850 litres.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lastly, the term <strong>water footprint<\/strong> can also be\napplied to a <strong>region or country<\/strong>, meaning the volume of water directly or\nindirectly used to render products and services consumed by its inhabitants. In\nSpain, for example, we can make comparative estimations between autonomous\ncommunities and in the entire country, as found in &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.chj.es\/Descargas\/ProyectosOPH\/Consulta%20publica\/PHC-2015-2021\/ReferenciasBibliograficas\/UsosdelAgua\/MARM,2011c.Huella%20hidrica%20de%20Espana%5B1%5D.pdf\"><em>La huella h\u00eddrica de Espa\u00f1a<\/em> (Spain&#8217;s Water Footprint)<\/a>,&#8221; published by the\nMinistry of the Environment and Rural and Marine Affairs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The farming sector is fully immersed in a\ntransformation to implement solutions to improve efficient and responsible\nwater use. Tools like the water footprint can help us to objectively verify and\nbe aware of global consumption for each food, good, service, and region, so we\ncan work to reduce their impact on water resources.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Water and food production are clearly interrelated.
