Energy is an essential part of life. It meets human needs all while creating industrial, commercial, and social wealth. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, producing energy from fossil fuels increases climate change and degrades air quality, which deteriorates ecosystems and is harmful to health.<\/p>

Spain’s current energy model is highly dependent on fossil fuels that\ncome from abroad. This means that we always depend on the ups and downs in the\ninternational oil and natural gas market, which leads to a huge deficit in the\ntrade balance. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bearing this in mind, and in addition to reducing greenhouse gas\nemissions, working toward renewable energies would clearly provide Spain with\ngreat benefits, such as savings on fossil fuel importations, improved air\nquality and public health, and the creation of new jobs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The environmental results achieved are already there to see. According\nto the Ministry for Ecological Transition\nand Demographic Challenge<\/a>, in the\nyear 2020, CO2<\/sup> emissions worldwide decreased by 14%, thanks to an\nincrease in electricity generated by renewable sources and the decreased use of\ncoal. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Today, this means that the activity sector that produces the most\ngreenhouse gas emissions is transport, at 27 %<\/a>, while electricity generation\nonly accounts for 10% of total emissions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Even so, in addition to making efficient use of resources and reducing\nfossil fuel dependency, a sustainable energy model should make it easy for\nconsumers to play an active role, either directly or indirectly, in all phases\nof the energy activity chain. It should be capable of meeting their needs, and\nalso capable of benefiting the environment with smart, well-organised\nmanagement of energy generation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We can already see this shift in perspective in the European Union. For\nexample, the Renewable Energy Directive requires that consumers be guaranteed\nthe right to produce, consume, store, and sell their own renewable energy.\nMoreover, the Directive that establishes standards for the electricity market\ndefines a new role: citizen energy communities, which will play a very\nimportant role for people to participate in the electricity sector. How? By\nimproving energy independence and providing greater freedom of choice for\nconsumers. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

If we follow the \u201cHoja de ruta del Autoconsumo<\/em>\n(Self-Supply Roadmap)\u201d<\/a> and the \u201cEstrategia de Almacenamiento\nenerg\u00e9tico<\/em> (Energy\nStorage Strategy)\u201d<\/a>, the end\ngoal is in 2050. Spain will become a country that is not only climate neutral,\nbut also more energetically independent, and therefore, freer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
